Adult Assessment of Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. It is characterized by difficulties with social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors. ASD is a lifelong condition, but with early intervention and support, people with ASD can live happy and fulfilling lives.

In the past, it was thought that Autism was a childhood disorder. However, it is now known that Autism can be diagnosed in adults. In fact, it is estimated that 1 in 59 adults in the United States has ASD.

There are a number of different ways to assess for autism in adults. One common approach is to use a combination of clinical interviews and standardized assessments. Clinical interviews allow the clinician to ask questions about the person's history and current functioning. Standardized assessments provide a more objective measure of the person's skills and abilities.

Some of the most commonly used standardized assessments for autism in adults include:

  • Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2)
  • Asperger's Autism Diagnostic Scale (AA-DAS)
  • Ritvo Autism Asperger Diagnostic Scale (RAADS-14)
  • Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ)

The ADOS-2 is a semi-structured observation that is used to assess social communication and interaction, repetitive behaviors, and restricted interests. The AA-DAS is a self-report questionnaire that is used to assess the symptoms of autism in adults. The RAADS-14 is a self-report questionnaire that is used to assess the symptoms of Asperger's syndrome. The SCQ is a parent-report questionnaire that is used to assess the social communication skills of children and adolescents.

If you are concerned that you or someone you know may be on the Autism spectrum, it is important to talk to a doctor or mental health professional. They can help you to get an assessment and make sure that you receive the right treatment.
